MotorPunk Towers is staffed by a handful of stubborn old men that have all proudly owned the original 1.6-litre mk1 Mazda MX-5, and still believe that the old NA was – and always will be – the finest incarnation of the breed. However, our chum Alex at Carfection is of a different generation; chaps like him tend to look forward to each evolution of their favourite sports cars while we older folks at MotorPunk are perhaps more guilty of looking backwards with rose tinted specs.

While I was manning the camera car on this shoot Rich and Alex had a loosely scripted argument about which really is best: the brand new range-topping mk4 from Mazda’s press fleet or Rich’s classic mk1 from a quarter-century earlier…
